Postcard Saint-Jean-de-Luz – Illustration Lotza | Port, Heritage & Basque Country

Embark on a stroll through the heart of the Basque Country with this postcard illustrated by Lotza, which transports you to the picturesque port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, with the majestic Rhune River as a backdrop. This original work gently and vividly captures the maritime soul and unique identity of this iconic port city on the Basque coast.

The illustration invites you to stroll along the quays, where the houses with red shutters, the hanging nets, and the moored boats bear witness to a centuries-old tradition that is still very much alive. In the foreground, the eye is drawn to the Airosa, the oldest boat still in operation in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Built in 1954, this tuna fishing boat embodies the living memory of the port. Belonging to the same fishing family for four generations, the Airosa is much more than just a ship: it is a symbol of perseverance, family heritage, and love of the sea.

In the 16th century, Saint-Jean-de-Luz already lived to the rhythm of the tides. Saint-Jean-de-Luz fishermen embarked on long whaling expeditions in the North Atlantic or to fish for cod in the cold waters of Newfoundland. The fruits of their hard work supplied the fishmongers' stalls and the tables of the town's inns, becoming a vital economic resource for the region. This maritime past, steeped in courage and know-how, still permeates the port's atmosphere today.

Today, around forty fishing boats registered in the Bayonne maritime district are still based in Saint-Jean-de-Luz/Ciboure. The port remains active, vibrant, and faithful to its history. Between tradition and modernity, it embodies the authenticity of a Basque Country where the sea and people continue to write their destiny together.

This postcard by Lotza is much more than just an image. Carefully printed in Charente, it celebrates the raw and warm beauty of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the deep attachment to the sea, and the cultural richness of the Basque Country. Perfect for lovers of seascapes, local history, or graphic art, it invites you to extend the magic of a timeless place.

Hi, I'm Lotza!

The illustrator

Hi, I'm Lisa and I illustrate all the posters you can find in this online store.

I draw the posters on Illustrator using a pen, a vector drawing tool.
My illustrations are not transformed photos, called "vectorized" in the jargon. I choose my destinations myself; I am currently working on my Tour de France.

To create an illustration, I often use photos from my travels or royalty-free photos for commercial use in order to remain faithful to reality and I take the liberty of modifying the design and layout.

I also base my work on my drawings, which I scan and redraw on Illustrator; this is especially the case for my portraits of women.
