Description

Fly to Martinique with this original work by Lotza, a colorful invitation to discover the vibrant soul of this Caribbean island.

Martinique, a land with a complex and historical past, was conquered in 1794 by the English, who attempted to delay the abolition of slavery, a scourge that deeply affected local society. Recovered by France after the Treaty of Amiens, Martinique remained under Napoleonic rule, and slavery was maintained there, generating tensions and resistance among the enslaved populations. The latter soon rose up with force and determination, until, on May 27, 1848, the abolition of slavery was finally proclaimed on the island, marking a decisive turning point for the freedom and dignity of the Martinicans.

At the heart of this illustration, Lotza depicts with a touch of modernity and gaiety round yoles , these traditional boats emblematic of Martinique. Their hulls in bright and flamboyant colors contrast with the deep blue of the Caribbean Sea, symbolizing both the maritime heritage and the cultural vitality of the island. These boats, used since the 1940s by fishermen, were originally propelled mainly by sail to reach the fishing grounds before returning to the port, often in a tight order called perlier , in order to sell the day's catch at local markets.

Today, the round boat is much more than just a means of transport: it has become a sporting and festive icon with its famous annual race , an event that brings together thousands of passionate spectators every year. This competition, combining technique, endurance and team spirit, perpetuates a living tradition that honors ancestral know-how and the unbreakable bond of the Martinicans with the sea.

With this illustration, Lotza pays homage to this rich and contrasting history, blending collective memory, popular traditions, and tropical light. The shimmering colors, the dynamic shapes, and the serenity of the landscape invite the eye to immerse itself in the unique atmosphere of Martinique, between island gentleness and strength of character.

This work is a true window onto a territory where past and present converse, where Creole culture and stories of emancipation combine with natural beauty and the joy of living. A visual journey that will appeal to art lovers and history buffs alike, and which reminds us that behind every image lies a story to be discovered.

Martinique, a French island in the West Indies, has a historical past marked by colonization, slavery, and the struggle for freedom. Conquered by the English in 1794, Martinique quickly returned to French control thanks to the Treaty of Amiens. Despite this, slavery continued under Napoleon Bonaparte, sparking slave revolts demanding an immediate end to this inhumane practice. This struggle culminated on May 27, 1848, the official date of the abolition of slavery in Martinique, a key moment in the island's history.

Hi, I'm Lotza!

The illustrator

Hi, I'm Lisa and I illustrate all the posters you can find in this online store.

I draw the posters on Illustrator using a pen, a vector drawing tool.
My illustrations are not transformed photos, called "vectorized" in the jargon. I choose my destinations myself; I am currently working on my Tour de France.

To create an illustration, I often use photos from my travels or royalty-free photos for commercial use in order to remain faithful to reality and I take the liberty of modifying the design and layout.

I also base my work on my drawings, which I scan and redraw on Illustrator; this is especially the case for my portraits of women.
